Sixth Annual Skate for Catherine!

Year SIX! Six years in a row! The Catherine Elizabeth Blair Memorial Fund is a local non-profit that is near and dear to my heart. Their mission is dedicated to raising funds for developing treatments for the childhood cancer neuroblastoma. Catherine was a patient at the pediatric cancer clinic where I worked – she was a great kid and her family is amazing. The foundation held its first “Skate for Catherine!” event on March 1st, 2012 at Kettler Capitals Iceplex […]

Equality, Politics, Washington DC, Women's March

Women’s March 2017, Washington, D.C.

Regardless of your politics, you can’t deny the power of the worldwide marches held on January 21, 2017. Estimated attendance figures are over 2.9 million people, the largest in U.S. history, and I was lucky enough to have been able to join them. More incredible than the turnout was the mood of the march – one of positivity, unity, and peace. That’s democracy and free speech in action. These photos were shot with a Canon 5DIII and a Canon 24-70mm […]

Kavi Workspace 2015 Annual User Group Conference

I recently had the pleasure of covering the Fourth Annual Kavi Workspace User Group Conference in Alexandria, Virginia. Kavi is a software company based in Portland, Oregon that gives its users a platform for collaborative team work, structured workflows, and secure participation. I was contacted by Mark Ace, president of Kavi, and asked to cover key moments in the meeting while also capturing candid moments from around the room. Working as an event photographer is always a lot of fun, and […]

The 2015 Timmy Awards

Guess who was the photographer covering the 2015 Timmy Awards? This guy. The Timmys are held to recognize the best places for technology professionals to work and are held by Tech in Motion, a national events organization for tech enthusiasts created by Jobspring Partners and Workbridge Associates. Categories for awards included Best Tech Startup, Best Tech Manager, and Best Tech Work Culture. There were also a number of companies holding demos at the event, which was open bar (ooh), and had a ton of attendees. Event photography […]

Claire + Eric’s Wedding – Hunter House, Vienna, Virginia

Claire and Eric are a couple of really cool cats. They found me via Reddit and asked if I would be their wedding photographer. I don’t do weddings very often due to my tight schedule but knew, after a little bit of correspondence, that they were an awesome couple. I was thrilled to be covering their special day. Their ceremony was held at Hunter House at Nottoway Park in Vienna, Virginia on a bright Autumn day. It was awesome – everyone was […]

We Make Reston!

Guess what? All three of my B+W portraits were accepted by the Initiative for Public Art – Reston and will be on display as part of the We Make Reston exhibit, an INSIDE OUT project. The portraits are up at the Jo Ann Rose Gallery at Reston Community Center Lake Anne, the Wiehle-Reston East Metro Station, and South Lakes High School. Neat! Visit J.Yi Photography on Facebook! Vaughn and Alex’s Proposal – Lincoln Memorial, Washington, DC

Vaughn contacted a few weeks ago via Reddit and asked if I would cover his proposal photos at the Lincoln Memorial. Yes. Heck yes. Proposal photoshoots are crazy and fun and pretty much the best things ever. No matter how well planned a proposal is, it can really go either way. Doing it at a monument kind of ramps that up! Lots of foot traffic, really crowded. There is no guarantee that light, location, weather, or tourists will cooperate. There’s literally no […]

July Talk at the Rock and Roll Hotel

July Talk is an awesome Canadian band blues-influenced rock band with a cool, unique sound. Members: Peter Dreimanis on guitar and vocals, singer Leah Fay, guitarist Ian Docherty, bassist Josh Warburton and drummer Danny Miles. How’d I describe them? It’s as if a young Tom Waits found his June Carter and started a grit-blues rock band, except June’s now an uninhibited, manic pixie who defines sexiness and cool. July Talk was touring with The Rural Alberta Advantage in support of […]

Against Me! at the 9:30 Club

Against Me! is awesome and their latest album Transgender Dysphoria Blues (Amazon Link), is just as great. This is their first album since Laura Jane Grace’s public coming out as transgender and you can hear a myriad of conflicting emotions as the album plays. I saw Against Me! this past May at Rams Head Live and it was probably the best show I have ever been to. The energy of the band and the crowd was celebratory, explosive, and entirely infectious. The bumps and […]

Covering Scena Theater: Press Photos for the Productions of ‘Shining City’ and ‘Molly’.

Scena Theater (website/Facebook/tickets) is a D.C. institution that has given the area dozens of wonderful productions. I was approached by the theater to provide press photography for two of this season’s plays: Shining City by Conor McPherson and the world premiere of Molly by George O’Brien. Shining City, directed by Robert McNamara and featuring Lee Ordeman, Ron Litman, Ellie Nicoll, and Kevin O’Reilly, is about a Dublin man who is convinced he sees the ghost of his dead wife and seeks the counsel of a psychologist […]
