Sonia Coonen, Part II: Medium Format Film

Last week I published a set of photos that model Sonia Coonen and I created with digital camera. This set of photos are the analog images that were made. The film used was Kodak Portra 400 at ISO400. The camera used was a Mamiya RB67 Pro-SD and the images were shot with a 90mm and 190mm pair of lenses. There truly is nothing that matches the beauty of real film. The process, the chemistry, the anticipation, and the image. With digital […]

Sonia Coonen, Part I: Digital

I had the pleasure of shooting with model Sonia Coonen this past Saturday. We had contacted each other on Model Mayhem and agreed to meet the next day for some test photos. Though a bit bright, the day was fortunately evenly overcast and lent itself nicely to our use. Sonia has a great look and attitude. We hit it off nicely and were able to shoot digital and medium format film images. This entry will feature images shot digitally with […]

A Wandering Roll of 120

I love medium format. Film is my absolute favorite way to shoot. Photos were all made from a single roll of Ektar 100 shot with a Mamiya RB67 SD Pro. First three captures were taken in September at Gettysburg National Military Park in Pennsylvania, the next four at the National Shrine Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes in Maryland (a really neat roadside stop, even for a heathen like me), and the last three frames were shot in December outside […]

Marisa and Geordi, Manassas National Battlefield Park

I went on a short walk at Manassas National Battlefield Park this weekend with Marisa and Geordi. The place was absolutely littered with photographers! We timed the trip nicely with the sun – there’s nothing better than natural light, especially during Autumn. All photographs were made with a Canon 5DII and the Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L II lens at ISO400. Visit J.Yi Photography on Facebook!

Northern Virginia CureSearch Walk 2012

CureSearch is a  national non-profit organization supporting childhood cancer research, raising money to help fund the Children’s Oncology Group (COG), a network of 200+ hospitals, universities, and cancer centers working together to reach a 100% cure rate for childhood cancer.  A few weeks ago I had the honor of covering the 3rd Annual Northern Virginia CureSearch Walk. Last year’s walk , which I also covered, raised over $80,000… this year’s walk raised over $125,000! Congratulations to everyone for a great walk! […]

Sheri Miller, With Hearts in Her Eyes

I recently coordinated a shoot with model Sheri Miller (MM# 2556797). We wanted to have an outdoor shoot to take full advantage of the unusually pleasant weather and decided on a light fashion/editorial concept. After drafting out a few shots and setting a date we went for it! You can click on any of the thumbnails for a larger version. All images were created with a Canon 5D mark II and a Canon 70-200 f/2.8L II lens. We were able […]

Farewell, OV-103

Today was the final flight of Space Shuttle Discovery. Piggybacked (well… technically “mated” with o__o) on a modified Boeing 747, Discovery left Kennedy Space Center at daybreak and made a journey around D.C. before finally landing at Washington-Dulles International Airport. Discovery‘s final destination will be in the most excellent Smithsonian Udvar-Hazy Center where it will replace the Space Shuttle Enterprise (which had actually never been in space… long story). I arrived at the Udvar-Hazy Center around 8:30 a.m. and joined […]

Introducing: Norman Rockwell

Norman Rockwell is a very talented local band that includes members frontman Joshua Johnston, lead guitarist/mandolin/fiddle/banjo/et. al player Ben Hirsch , bassist Sean Meyers, and drummer Nathan Read. If you have seen them play live you know the energy and charm they possess – if you haven’t then you should do yourself a favor and definitely check them out (show info on website and end of blog post). We shot this session outdoors to match the Americana sound and feel […]

Northern Virginia CureSearch Walk 2011

A few weeks ago I was approached by members of the Northern Virginia CureSearch team and was asked to cover their 2011 CureSearch Walk in Fairfax Corner. Having participated in the walk the prior (and inaugural) year, I was more than happy to oblige and was honored to have been asked. CureSearch is a  national non-profit organization supporting childhood cancer research. The money raised by CureSearch is used to help fund the Children’s Oncology Group (COG), which is a network […]
