We Make Reston!

Guess what? All three of my B+W portraits were accepted by the Initiative for Public Art – Reston and will be on display as part of the We Make Reston exhibit, an INSIDE OUT project. The portraits are up at the Jo Ann Rose Gallery at Reston Community Center Lake Anne, the Wiehle-Reston East Metro Station, and South Lakes High School. Neat! Visit J.Yi Photography on Facebook! Guido + Gulnura – Arlington, Virginia

Guido and Gulnura contacted me for an engagement session with a bit of a twist. The two met overseas at a US embassy, fell in love, and became engaged. They were both in town for now but were going to be separated into different countries for work and needed their session, retouching, and prints delivered within a few days! Never one to step down from a challenge, I accepted, we made plans, and we made these beautiful images. I pride […]

Scena Theatre Play Photographer DC Virginia

Covering Scena Theatre: Press Photos for the Production of ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’.

Scena Theater (website/Facebook/tickets) is one of my favorite clients. I’ve had the pleasure of covering their past three productions (The Norwegians, Shining City and Handbag) and recently covered their newest, a wildly funny genderbent take on Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest. Directed by Robert McNamara and featuring two time Helen Hayes Award winner Nanna Ingvarsson, Brian Hemmingsen (Helen Hayes Award nominee, twice), Danielle Davy, Bob Sheire, Graham Pilato, David Bryan Jackson, Ellie Nicoll, Amie Cazel, and Mary Suib, The Importance of Being Earnest definitely should […]

Covering Scena Theatre: Press Photos for the Production of ‘The Norwegians’.

Scena Theater (website/Facebook/tickets) is great. I’ve shot three of their productions and every one has been wonderful. Scena is a D.C. institution and has brought the District countless, great nights of entertainment. I’ve covered their last two productions, Shining City and Handbag. Their latest, The Norwegians, is one of the funniest things I’ve seen on stage and features great acting, direction, and production values. Directed by Robert McNamara and featuring Helen Hayes Award winner Nanna Ingvarsson, Brian Hemmingsen (Helen Hayes Award nominee, twice), Ron Litman & Nora Achrati, The Norwegians is […]

Fourth Annual Skate for Catherine – Promotional Video and Photo Recap

Year four! The Catherine Elizabeth Blair Memorial Fund is a local non-profit dedicated to raising funds for developing treatments for the childhood cancer neuroblastoma. The foundation held its first “Skate for Catherine!” event on March 1st, 2012 at Kettler Capitals Iceplex in Arlington, Virginia (blog entry here) and has held the event every March. We did more promotion of the event this year, including a few promotional videos. Here’s one from the foundation’s Youtube channel: This year’s event had over 400 […]

Vaughn and Alex’s Proposal – Lincoln Memorial, Washington, DC

Vaughn contacted a few weeks ago via Reddit and asked if I would cover his proposal photos at the Lincoln Memorial. Yes. Heck yes. Proposal photoshoots are crazy and fun and pretty much the best things ever. No matter how well planned a proposal is, it can really go either way. Doing it at a monument kind of ramps that up! Lots of foot traffic, really crowded. There is no guarantee that light, location, weather, or tourists will cooperate. There’s literally no […]

July Talk at the Rock and Roll Hotel

July Talk is an awesome Canadian band blues-influenced rock band with a cool, unique sound. Members: Peter Dreimanis on guitar and vocals, singer Leah Fay, guitarist Ian Docherty, bassist Josh Warburton and drummer Danny Miles. How’d I describe them? It’s as if a young Tom Waits found his June Carter and started a grit-blues rock band, except June’s now an uninhibited, manic pixie who defines sexiness and cool. July Talk was touring with The Rural Alberta Advantage in support of […]

Covering Scena Theater: Press Photos for the Production of ‘Handbag’.

Scena Theater (website/Facebook/tickets) is a D.C. institution that has brought the District countless, wonderful productions. I covered their last production, Shining City,  a powerful drama that kept me incredibly engaged the whole time. I recently did the press photography for their next production, Handbag. Directed by Robert McNamara and featuring Anne Nottage, Amanda Forstrom, Gray West, Edward C. Nagel, Robert Sheire, and Haely Jardas, Handbag is one helluva ride. It’s best to go in not knowing what to expect so I’ll leave it […]

Corey + Kelly’s Engagement Shoot

I’ve known Corey + Kelly for over a year now, we’re all members of the Northern Virginia Facial Hair Club, a local non-profit that raises money for charity and thinks that facial hair is cool (no beard needed to join!). They’re cool people and we were all overjoyed when they got engaged. 🙂 They asked me to be their engagement photographer, to which I totally said yes! Even better, they brought their dog Velvet along! Attached are a handful of […]
